Pregnancy Comfort: Understanding the Role of Kinesio Tape in Pain Relief and Support

As a PT I use many modalities to help my patients find relief to pain and provide support to their body, especially during the ever changing dynamics of pregnancy.

One such modality is Kinesio-tape. A stretchy or elastic adhesive tape that is used for a variety of reasons. The theory behind the tape is it provides optimal stimulation through space, movement and cooling which allows the body to self-heal.

During pregnancy Kinesio-tape can be applied in many ways, but I use it a lot on the belly, especially for those experiencing pubic symphysis pain, pelvic heaviness, back pain, or doming/coning.

I do this because the tape has the potential to provide the following benefits:

  1. Support: Kinesio tape may provide support to the growing abdomen, offering a sensation of lift and lightness, especially in the later stages of pregnancy when the belly feels heavy.

  2. Pain Relief: It could potentially alleviate lower back pain or discomfort associated with pregnancy by offering gentle support to the abdominal muscles and lower back.

  3. Posture Support: Kinesio tape application might encourage better posture, assisting in maintaining an upright position and relieving strain on the back muscles.

  4. Reduced Swelling: Some individuals find that kinesiology tape helps with mild swelling or fluid retention in the abdomen or lower back areas.

  5. Muscle Relaxation: The tape's application could aid in muscle relaxation and reducing tension, particularly in the abdominal area, offering a sense of comfort.

  6. Improved Movement: For some, kinesio tape might enhance mobility and comfort during daily activities or exercise by providing light support to the abdominal muscles.

When using K-tape here are some guidelines:

  1. Test a small strip first to check for skin sensitivity. If your skin does not react with irritation, then you can apply to a larger area with less risk of skin irritation.

  2. Clean the area first before applying, lotions and oils can impede the tape adhering properly to the skin.

  3. The tape can be used up to 5-7 days at a time, but remove earlier if for some reason your skin is irritated.

  4. To remove the tape anchor your skin and slowly peel away the tape. This can be more easily done when wet.

  5. While some taping techniques can be done by yourself, it’s recommended your follow the guidance of a trained professional (not just someone who watched videos on how to use it) to reduce your risk unnecessary harm

Remember, while these benefits are reported by some individuals, the effectiveness of kinesiology tape can vary for each person. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional or a certified therapist before using kinesio tape during pregnancy to ensure safe and appropriate application.
